Drop Box (series), 2018 - 2020

Drop Box is a series of mimetic sculptures that take on the form of the unfolded nets of cardboard boxes. Each ‘Drop Box’ sculpture is made out of powder coated mild steel, they can’t be folded into boxes and in this losslessness of function, of content, of any real purpose, they exist purely as a form.

The idea for these sculptures came about through regularly receiving materials ordered via the internet and encountering many different forms of packaging. I became interested in how breaking through the cardboard was always the first interaction with the object inside. This process of revealing the object seems to be hinged upon anticipation, the cardboard almost becomes like a skin, ripe with irresistible potential. There seems to be an interest in the examination of form, of peeling back layers, of revealing something. It’s kind of the climax of the moment where something does or does not get revealed. The sheer number of youtube accounts dedicated to unboxing videos highlights that we are living in a time of obsessive fetishism around undressing objects.

Drop Box has been shown at: Private Song Pt. 1, Doosan Gallery, Seoul, South Korea, 2020; Coventry Biennial, Coventry, UK, 2019; Construction House Order & Limitations, S1 Artspace, Sheffield, UK, 2019
